BJP to unveil new Bengal President at Science City event Thursday

The West Bengal BJP is set to announce its new state president this week, with a grand felicitation event scheduled for Thursday at Science City. Preparations are in full swing, and all district presidents, MPs, MLAs, and senior office-bearers have been officially invited to attend. The identity of the new president has not yet been disclosed by the party, but internal communication refers to the individual as ‘X’.

According to party insiders, the event has been planned centrally and attendance has been made mandatory for all state-level organisational leaders. Specific instructions have been issued to mandal-level presidents to reach the venue on time. Central BJP leader and former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad will be present at the function, and will also oversee the selection of the new state president.

As of Tuesday, many senior leaders involved in the event’s coordination stated they were not informed about the identity of the incoming president. Leaders from North Bengal began arriving in Kolkata on Tuesday night, while others are expected to fly in Thursday morning. Party members have only been told that a new president will be officially welcomed during the programme.

A senior party leader said, “We have just been informed that there will be a programme to welcome the new state president. No other information has been shared.” Party sources indicate that Rajya Sabha MP Shamik Bhattacharya is a leading contender for the post. He is currently in Delhi and is expected to return to Kolkata on Wednesday along with Ravi Shankar Prasad. Bhattacharya recently met with BJP national president J.P. Nadda in the national capital.

The event marks a key organisational shift in the state unit. The West Bengal BJP leadership has not confirmed when the formal announcement will be made, but all arrangements have been finalised for the Thursday programme. The new state president will take charge in the presence of central and state leaders.
